The Watermill Park in La Mata is an oasis of tranquility where a varied nature, spread over 172,000 m2, counterbalances the hustle and bustle of the district and the city of Torrevieja. Named after the replica of an old watermill where salt was once ground for a long time, a spectacular water-rich park has been created. In addition to lots of water, visitors can enjoy a large pine forest, sand dunes and finally the beach.
The area is therefore perfectly suited for recreationists who want to relax on benches or at picnic tables. There is enough shade to enjoy it to the fullest. But walkers will also find a pleasant pastime on the winding paths along the water features, pine trees and through the dunes.
The absolute eye-catcher is a water feature at the highest point of the park. From there, water flows down from the hill thanks to a system of interconnected viaducts. There, the water flows through the pine forest to fresh water areas and finally flows into a lake with a central fountain. Geese, ducks and turtles live in the lake. The viaducts lead over paths and beautiful bridges. Along the hundreds of metres long route you can also admire small waterfalls.
A small play area has also been created in the park for younger visitors. Because the entire area is so diverse, there is also a great variety of flora and fauna. Animals that thrive there include woodlarks, barn swallows, red-headed geckos, field mice and red squirrels.
For recreationists and walkers, the park is a wonderful location to find peace. From a purely natural point of view, however, its importance goes a step further.
The dune area that goes from the coastal area of the salt lakes in Santa Pola to Cabo Cervera on the Orihuela Costa is an important coastal corridor that connects the two important wetlands of the salt lakes In Santa Pola and La Mata and Torrevieja.
