Guardamar del Segura could never have existed in its current form without the protection of the Alfonso XIII park. This area, directly behind the dunes, was developed in the 19th century with an important purpose. The planting of thousands of trees and shrubs was a powerful and necessary measure against the ever-advancing sand. It is never possible to determine exactly what Guardamar would look like without that buffer, but experts suspect that large parts of what is now inhabited area would otherwise have been swallowed up by the sand.

This foresight was not only wise, but nowadays also offers visitors the opportunity to fully enjoy the rich flora and fauna in the 800 hectares of nature behind the dunes. Officially declared an Area of Natural Interest, this northern part of Guardamar allows you to enjoy the tranquility of its natural beauty while strolling among palms, pine, cypress and eucalyptus trees. And because the nature park is surrounded by the row of dunes along a 11-kilometer-long sandy beach and a marina at the mouth of the Segura river, this can also be experienced during a relaxing walk.

If you want a snack in the middle of more nature after a sporty tour, you can visit the adjacent Sofia Park. In this oasis of peace you will find a café, children's playgrounds and water features with swans, ducks and turtles. A petanque court and an auditorium where shows and concerts are held in the summer complete this beautiful city park.

A quiet day in Guardamar is of course only really perfect if you let Mediterranean life pass by at a slow pace somewhere on a terrace on the boulevard.
