Three days of medieval festivals in Orihuela

Three days of medieval festivals in Orihuela - Van Dam Estates
6th January 2022 author: Remco van Drie

Every year on the last weekend of January, the historic center of Orihuela turns into a medieval fortress. Although medieval feasts are popular in many towns and cities on the costas, nowhere is it set up as grand and exuberant as in Orihuela. From Friday to Sunday the jeans are put in the wardrobe and the clothing style from a distant past dictates the street scene.

The festivities are special for several reasons. After more than twenty editions, it has grown into a huge 'market' with hundreds of stalls over a length of about three kilometers. Beyond its size, the organizers' serious effort to do justice to medieval life is commendable. Finally, Orihuela has the advantage of providing a credible historical background thanks to the presence of old churches, a cathedral, a palace and many other old buildings.

What can visitors expect? Although there are differences in accent every year, most attractions return annually. Part of the center will be devoted to demonstrations of ancient crafts such as stonemasons, weavers, shoemakers, bakers and jewelery makers. At other locations things are a little less serious with a range of puppeteers, drummers and musicians playing ancient instruments. Especially for the younger visitors, an area has been created where an old-fashioned merry-go-round, old games and animals such as donkeys and camels enhance the fun.

And don't be surprised if you suddenly come across a belly dancer showing off her skills in the streets of Orihuela.
During the three medieval days, music, dance and theater shows are also regularly performed and visitors can participate in a variety of workshops.

Residents of the city, who have their home on the Orihuela Costa, can use the free buses that shuttle between the city and the coast during the three days. Interested parties are asked to book this transport in advance.
