The Costa Calida offers an enormously rich and varied range of natural beauty. From winding rivers that meander through canyons to bizarrely shaped caves that still leave traces of ancient cultures. And from strange landscapes that evoke associations with distant planets to idyllic regions that radiate serene tranquility. This wealth of natural wealth inspired the regional tourism institute to draw up a list of 10 'unique natural wonders' that give a good idea of what the province of Murcia has to offer visitors. In our blog, we offer a first glimpse in two parts of what we present as Mother Murcia's Magic Moments.
Just outside the municipality of Bulla we find Salto de Usero. There are several water features created by water that flows down from rough rock formations. The result is icy cold natural ponds that attract many visitors looking for a cool place to cool off, especially during the summer months. People with an interest in geology can also indulge themselves there. They can see the beautiful effects of erosion in the landscape on the two different types of limestone. That was also the reason why it was given the title of National Monument. In addition, beautiful walks can be made in the area. The popularity of Salto de Usero may have the disadvantage that the municipality wants to limit the number of visitors. Therefore, interested parties must book in advance on the website of the municipality of Bulla.
Erosion is also what makes Monte Arabi so special. In Yecla, in the north of the region, the erosion by water has created a spectacular and in some places surreal landscape. A walk in the area takes visitors from one surprise to the next. Strange holes, caves, bizarre shelters and strangely carved rock surfaces all evoke wonder and amazement. In addition, there is quite a bit of prehistoric art to be found in caves here. The latter is in any case a wealth that the province of Murcia prides itself on. Much more of this kind of art can be found in many places in the eastern coastal areas.
Barrancos de Gebas is described by many people as a 'moon landscape on earth'. This wild, rugged landscape lies between Alhama de Murcia and Librilla. It forms a magnificent contrast with the Algeciras water reservoir in the background. The relaxed beauty of the water and the almost cruel-looking lunar landscape does not work for everyone. But many visitors find this contrast to be beautiful. Anyone who gives this Barrancos de Gebas a chance will be pleasantly surprised by the contrasting colours and shapes of this landscape. Those who especially like green nature will have to make do with the few small plants that manage to survive here.
Mirador Alto de Bayna is more or less in the heart of the province. This idyllic green oasis is ideal for long walks along the Segura river. This way you can optimally enjoy the lush and very varied nature. From the nearby village of Blanca, visitors can enjoy the beautiful views of the greenery, the Azud de Ojos dam and the Segura river for a while after a nice walk. Next week we will complete the tour of Murcia's Magical Moments.
