The golden edge of the lockdown

The golden edge of the lockdown - Van Dam Estates

The good news came unexpectedly in June. The mating urge in the flamingo colony in the salt lake of Torrevieja had reached a boiling point. More than 600 descendants were the result. The lockdown we hated so much was a godsend to them. Less traffic and less pollution created near-ideal conditions for reproduction. Almost, because sufficient rainfall and thus more food is also necessary for a birth explosion. And sure enough: the rain came. Add to that the fact that flamingos have a certain herd mentality (they all mate or none of the animals show any interest) and this natural phenomenon not previously recorded in Torrevieja is a fact.

It is important that it offers hope for the future. Flamingos prefer to return to the same place every year to reproduce. No miracles can be expected for the time being from the 600 newcomers. They are only able to give birth to their own offspring after about six years. So it is up to the now adult flamingos to repeat the feat of 2020 next year. While hopefully lockdowns will work out, a little rain (and therefore plenty of food) will certainly be a good thing for our leggy friends
