Greetings from the stork village

Greetings from the stork village - Van Dam Estates
5th April 2021 author: Jolanda van Dam

Here in Malpartida de Cáceres, not far from Portugal, the white stork rules. What inspired the graceful birds to settle here en masse to nest is open to discussion. Still, the locals give me very plausible explanations for the 150 or so couples who built their 'house' on their roofs. We had very good conditions here for the storks, one resident told me. Many water reservoirs have been created in the immediate vicinity. These are for grazing sheep and cows and for irrigation of the steppe area. The storks also made good use of it. With the creation of a waste mountain in the neighborhood, the birds were suddenly supplied with food on a silver platter as well as water.

The waste site has now been closed for years. Still, the storks keep on coming. They now also nest on spherical granite rocks outside the village and on the many long poles that have been placed in the landscape. Greetings again from this remarkable stork village, Jolanda.
