Elche goes medieval for a week

Elche goes medieval for a week - Van Dam Estates

Medieval markets are popular along the Costas. They serve as an alternative to the many local “fiestas” that each year commemorate the countless skirmishes and wars fought over centuries with the region’s various rulers. And also to the numerous festivities with religious themes.
The medieval markets, however, hark back to everyday life from those times. Elche plays an important role in this look back at history. Few towns or cities organize these festivities with such scale and seriousness. While these markets often last just a few days elsewhere, Elche devotes an entire week to them.

At the end of October or the beginning of November, the city once again dives deep into its past. Since 1990, this colourful event has been a fixed date on the annual calendar. Many elements are set traditions, yet each new edition always brings one or more surprises. To discover the full programme, a visit to the tourist office is well worth it. Visitors can be sure to find street markets filled with artisans practising centuries-old, nearly forgotten crafts. They can also indulge in medieval food: soups and stews cooked in large cauldrons, roasted meat, or nuts.
Each year, around sixty different events are offered, all with a medieval character: theatre performances, musical shows, exhibitions, fireworks, and various games for younger visitors.
The streets of Elche come alive with jesters, bards, stilt-walkers, dancers, and jugglers. Falconry shows are also, as always, a big attraction.

Of course, during the festive week it is perfectly normal to stroll through the streets in medieval costume. And not just for the professionals taking part in the event. Visitors too can parade around Elche as brave knights or charming princesses without anyone giving them a second look.
