With walks in and around Aspe, several goals can be achieved at once. This makes the little town, located about 20 kilometers from Alicante, a popular starting point for hikers with different interests. With a variety of hiking routes, visitors can enjoy culture, historical heritage, and diverse nature.
In the old Moorish town, with its somewhat illogical yet very charming layout of many narrow streets, there are already three completely different routes to follow. The 7-kilometer park route takes walkers along the many parks in Aspe. The 5-kilometer pilgrimage route passes churches, chapels, and numerous tributes to local saints.
A 3-kilometer trail along the Tarifa River feels like walking through an open-air museum. It offers a fascinating insight into how ingeniously ancestors managed water. Hydraulic systems were developed to collect water and distribute it across the often dry farmland. Along the way, hikers can see dams, an extensive network of irrigation canals, three aqueducts, drainage tunnels, an old bridge, and the ruins of a mill. As with all routes, the average walking time and even the estimated calorie consumption are indicated.
Since, in addition to the Tarifa River, the Vinalopó also flows through and along Aspe, the town is blessed with a very rich and varied flora and fauna. This means that nature lovers can also enjoy themselves, for example in the Sierra de la Ofra. In this well-preserved forest area, all kinds of ecosystems can be admired: mountains, agricultural zones, rivers, and ravines. In short, a guarantee of birdlife.
Finally, in the protected area of Los Algerezes, six well-marked hiking trails have been created. Walkers receive information in advance about the sights along the way, the length of the route, and the level of difficulty. Hikes range from 5 to 15 kilometers. For horse riders, there is a special 13-kilometer route.
