For jazz music enthusiasts in the region, the month of July is a month to look forward to every year. The San Javier Jazz festival has been held since 1998. An event that has since grown into a 'jazz festival' of international allure. Big names from the world of this genre then give concerts in the open-air auditorium near the sea. But, as is usual with jazz festivals, various artists also perform who do not strictly fall under that heading.

It all started with a group of jazz fanatics, who put the town on the Mar Menor on the map in 1998 with a modest festival. Five evenings with live music, but without big names, was a tentative start. More than 20 years later, the festival can boast visits from renowned artists such as Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, Wynton Marsalis and George Benson.

In the current format, enthusiasts can choose from approximately 17 evening concerts. Most evenings an act performs. Sometimes there are two on the program. It is now also used to schedule three free concerts outside the auditorium. The ardent jazz enthusiasts can buy a season ticket, which entitles them to tickets for eleven concerts for 120 euros.

The enthusiasm for San Javier Jazz has grown enormously over the years. The concerts edition of the festival were not only broadcast extensively on local radio and TV channels. The Spanish national TV channel TVE also paid a lot of attention to the festival.

The success of the festival is undoubtedly mainly due to the high quality of the acts that are brought to San Javier every year. This is possible because of a large number of sponsors who support the organizers financially in their endeavor to propel the festival forward in the momentum of the nations. It is therefore logical that the annual jazz month is now one of the largest cultural events in the Murcia region.

The location for the performances will certainly help with that. The open-air amphitheater with a capacity of 5,000 visitors is a beautiful setting for an evening of jazz. Moreover, it is widely praised for its good acoustics.
